Foothill ranchlands turned historic sanctuary.
Originally part of Rancho San Pascual, Altadena was developed in the 1880s by John Woodbury and his brother as a scenic foothill community above Pasadena. It became home to wealthy Easterners seeking California's mild climate, and later to a significant Black middle class drawn by its larger lots and less restrictive housing market. The Christmas Tree Lane — deodar cedars planted in 1885 — is the oldest large-scale Christmas lighting display in the world. After the devastating 2025 Eaton Fire, Altadena's historic homes and resilient community are rebuilding, making it one of the most talked-about real estate stories in Southern California.
