The story of Baldwin Hills

Developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s on land once owned by E.J. 'Lucky' Baldwin — the flamboyant gold rush-era investor and horseman — Baldwin Hills became one of the first upscale neighborhoods in Los Angeles open to Black professionals after restrictive covenants fell. Its hillside mid-century modern homes were designed by architects like Gregory Ain and A. Quincy Jones. The area suffered a devastating dam failure in 1963, but rebuilt stronger. Today it remains a cultural and architectural landmark for mid-century modern design and Black homeownership.
