The story of Hesperia

Hesperia was laid out in 1885 by the Hesperia Land and Water Company, which built a grand hotel and promoted the mesa as an agricultural colony; the water proved harder to come by than the brochures suggested, and the town stayed small until Chicago developer M. Penn Phillips relaunched it in 1954 with paved streets, a lake, and a golf course. Incorporated in 1988, it is now the closest High Desert city to the Cajon Pass, which makes it the practical choice for commuters working in the Inland Empire. Its newer subdivisions off Main Street and Ranchero Road pair contemporary floor plans with lots that would be unthinkable at the same price down the hill.
